As a Counsellor and Psychotherapist, I often meet people who have low self-esteem, low self-worth or a negative self-concept.  People who simply cannot see, or even believe that they have, their own potential.  The potential to be the very best version of themselves, the potential to effect positive change in their lives, the potential to be a positive influence for other people, the potential to do new things, the potential to do things well or better, the potential to contribute, the potential to make a difference, the potential to develop, learn and grow.  I believe that everyone, without exception, has potential.

A simple way that I ask my clients to explore this idea is by asking them to complete the following exercise:

  1. Identify 10 positive, healthy, helpful, meaningful or significant (in a good way)things that are important to you.
  2. Evaluate how you currently experience those 10 things in your life.  For example; how much a part of your life are they, currently?  How much time or effort do you invest in those 10 things?  How do/would those 10 things benefit your life? Try to describe how each one fits into your life, currently.  Identify any barriers that prevent you making any of those 10 things a bigger part of your life?  Identify what you will need to help you overcome those barriers.
  3. Set goals for making some, or all, of those 10 things a bigger part of your life.  If something is positive, healthy, helpful, meaningful or significant in a good way, we would benefit from  investing more time, effort and energy into making it a bigger part of our lives. Set goals for overcoming any of the barriers you identified, that prevent you making any of those 10 things a bigger part of your life; including asking others for help if needed.  If you can’t achieve your goal in one step, then create smaller goals that act as ‘stepping-stones’ that take you closer to achieving the main goal, one step at a time.

By completing this exercise, you will begin to not only see your potential, but by putting your goals into action, you will start becoming that potential.  By ‘living’ what matters to you, you will be more motivated, willing to participate, creative and passionate about life.
